Heath Spotted Orchid wildlife: insects, flowers and leaves

As well as being part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Weardale has an abundance of wildlife, important habitats and areas of geological importance.

Farmers and landwoners are encouraged to manage for wildlife and there are a number of grants and other forms of assistance available. For more information visit the DEFRA Website

We can all do our part to help the environment, from making sure we put litter in the bin to using energy efficient appliances in our homes. Durham County Council has more advice on how you can help with the Sustainable Communities Campaign.

For a local example including environmental education, field studies, rural skills training, community development and community arts, visit the Harehope Quarry Project.
